DESCRIPTION:Advances in sensing\, robotics and machine learning have recen
 tly led to scene understanding algorithms that have transformed smart city
  applications\, like transport\, healthcare and energy. However this techn
 ology has found slower uptake in the challenging world of blue light emerg
 ency response. In this talk I will present some of the key challenges face
 d by intelligent sensor systems in emergency situations including dynamic 
 changes of the environment\, lack of preinstalled network or sensor infras
 tructure\, and operation in previously unseen and unpredictable situations
 . I will then present recent multi-modal sensing approaches to addressing 
 these challenges.
