DESCRIPTION:If we're interested in studying morality scientifically – fo
r example\, to study the effectiveness of moral education programs or to s
tudy whether people who behave morally better tend to be happier than thei
r naughtier counterparts – we should be interested in constructing an ac
curate and reliable means for measuring a person's overall moral character
: a moralometer. Potential moralometers come in four varieties: self-ratin
gs\, informant ratings\, behavioral observation\, and physiological measur
es. I argue that there are practically insurmountable methodological probl
ems with all four approaches to constructing a moralometer.
