DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we consider a complexity reduction technique fo
 r the Vlasov equation based on a dynamical low-rank approximation. This ap
 proach allows us to resolve small-scale oscillations while still drastical
 ly reducing the number of degrees of freedom required to obtain an accurat
 e simulation. We highlight some recent algorithmic improvements to effecti
 vely use such methods (such as methods that conserve mass and energy) as w
 ell as emphasize efficient parallelization in order to run these schemes o
 n modern computer hardware. In particular\, we focus here on applying such
  techniques to kinetic Alfv&eacute\;n waves.
