DESCRIPTION:Interesting systems in physics and chemistry are typically com
posed by a huge number N of interacting particles. The time evolution of t
hese systems is governed by partial differential equations in N coupled\nv
ariables. Due to the huge number of degrees of freedom\, these equations a
re completely inaccessible to any analytic or numerical tool. Fortunately\
, it turns out that in several situations the dynamics of many body system
s can be approximated by effective evolution equations. In this talk\, I a
m going to present examples\nof quantum systems whose evolution can be des
cribed by effective equations\, and I will discuss some of the mathematica
l challenges connected with the derivation of these effective equations fr
 om first-principles quantum\ndynamics.\n
