DESCRIPTION:Our departmental seminar series\, Bigger Picture Talks\, runs
throughout the academic year\, inviting thought-leaders from across the wo
rld driving significant advances in our impact areas of energy\, health an
d sustainability to share and discuss their work with us.\n\nIn this talk\
, Professor Woods will outline some of the challenges associated with deca
rbonisation of the energy system\, exploring both supply and demand\, incl
uding the intermittency of renewable supply\, the fluctuations in both dai
ly and seasonal energy demand\, and the possible role of geological hydrog
en and carbon storage. He will then focus on the decarbonisation of heatin
g systems\, with a case study of St Johns College\, including opportunitie
s for energy efficiency\, the design of air\, ground and river heat pump s
ystems\, and upgrading building fabric. He will consider the implications
of scaling up such approaches\, for example across the UK\, and their impa
ct on net zero.\n\n*Speaker bio*\n\nProfessor Andy Woods works in fluid me
chanics of energy and the environment\, with expertise in multiphase flow
including : volcanic eruption dyamics\, geological carbon storage\, geothe
rmal power generation\; building energy and ventilation\, and geophysical
fluid dynamics\, including flow in porous media. He heads up the BP Instit
ute in University of Cambridge\, where he has worked since 2000. He has pu
blished over 200 papers on the above topics.\n\n"Please register to attend
