DESCRIPTION:Hydro-elastic waves (HEW) appear at very large scale in the ma
rginal ice zone where the ocean is covered by a thin layer of ice. The phy
sics of HEW is dominated by the bending elasticity of the thin sheet cover
ing the liquid\, but their propagation is much slower than plate (Lamb) wa
ves thanks to the fluid inertia.\nIn this seminar\, I will describe our ex
perimental approach of HEW. I will first focus on the typically parameter
range in which they can be observed at the laboratory scale. In a second s
tep\, I will show that HEW open promising possibilities for wave control.
In particular\, I will present experimental configurations that allow for
building an HEW based "optics"\, revisiting Snell's law\, geometrical opt
ics and Fourier optics in an hydrodynamical experiment. Last\, I will desc
ribe HEW propagation in periodically structured media\, revealing the emer
gence of band gaps and Dirac points.
