DESCRIPTION:Within the framework of the research project\, The Freedom of 
 the Streets: Gender and Urban Space in Eurasia 1600-1850\, which analyses 
 the gendering of early modern urban space\, this paper explores the East A
 sian capital of Edo (present-day Tokyo). The primary focus will be on the 
 streetscapes in the topography Illustrated Book of Famous Places in Edo (E
 do Meisho Zue\, 1834-36) and a methodology developed for the historical vi
 sual sources.
