DESCRIPTION:[The speaker is a Leverhulme Visiting Professor in DAMTP for t
he period March-August 2022. This seminar is one of two 'Leverhulme Lectur
es' that he will give during his stay here.]\n\nThe dryness of terrestrial
climate can be measured in terms of an\naridity index that is the ratio o
f annual precipitation to potential\nevapotranspiration. The United Nation
s Environment Programme defines\ndrylands as the terrestrial areas with an
aridity index of less than\n0.65\, which are further classified into hype
 r-arid\, arid\, semiarid\, and\ndry sub-humid lands. In this talk I will
present the response of\nterrestrial aridity and dryland areas to global w
arming in the framework\nof the UNEP aridity index. A mechanism that “w
armer is more arid” will\nbe discussed. The implications to geoengineer
ing and droughts will also\nbe discussed.
