DESCRIPTION:The presentation is predominantly based on an experimental stu
dy into the use of porosity located downstream of an aerofoil leading edge
for the reduction of turbulence interaction noise. Locating the porosity
well away from the leading edge has been shown in the literature to cause
a much lower negative impact on aerodynamic performance compared with loca
ting it directly at the leading edge where most of the lift is generated.
Noise measurements on a flat plate with downstream porosity will be compar
ed against the case of two tandem flat plates. In both cases\, the noise r
eduction spectra exhibit peaks of strong noise reduction at non-dimensiona
l frequencies that require an additional mechanism in which a phase shift
of 180 degrees is introduced in the interaction process. The presentation
will discuss a possible mechanism by which this phase inversion occurs and
outline a simple analytical model to predict qualitatively the noise redu
 ctions with downstream porosity
