DESCRIPTION:Seminar with Dr Fred Travis\, widely published researcher in t
he effects of meditation on brain development\, especially coherence withi
n the association cortex\, and its implication for physical and mental wel
l-being. Live EEG reading during the session.\n\n"I am interested in the u
pper tail of the distribution of human experiences and their associated br
ain patterns. My research combines interview data\,standard psychological
tests\, and EEG and PET measures.\n\nOur recent work investigates brain pa
tterns and subjective experiences of individuals reporting the experience
of enlightenment\, and the construction and validation of a brain based sc
ale--the Brain Integration Scale--to monitor growth of higher states of co
nsciousness.\n\nWhat is unique about Transcendental Meditation when compar
ed with other programmes is restful alertness--wakefulness without content
 . This is associated with 1) frontal alpha coherence\, 2) frontal-posteri
or alpha coherence in EEG\, and 3) frontal and parietal increases in cereb
ral metabolic rate and decreases in thalamic metabolic rate in neural imag
ing."\n\nNibbles from 5:30pm\n\nOrganised by Prof (Emeritus) Simon Maddrel
l from the Department of Zoology\n\nBooking and enquiries\, Patrice Gladwi
