DESCRIPTION:Being able to design molecular building blocks that efficientl
y self-assemble into nanostructures with\nwell-defined shape is an importa
nt contemporary research goal. The building blocks considered are often\na
nisotropic. In order to approach the ‘bottom-up’ design idea effective
ly\, it is useful to try to understand\nhow complex nanostructures existen
t in nature might form from their building blocks. In this talk I will be\
npresenting energy landscape studies on new rigid body potentials that sup
port a wide range of low-energy\nstructures often found in biological syst
 ems\, including helical strands\, open tubes\, icosahedral shells\nreminis
cent to virus capsids\, and even complex head-tail structures. By creating
the simplest virus capsid\nmodel to date\, we show that the assembly of c
omplex structures proceeds via universal guiding principles\ndetermined by
the anisotropy of the building blocks.
