DESCRIPTION:Supernovae - the explosions of stars - are one of the brightes
t phenomena in the Universe. In my talk\, based on my recent book on the s
ubject\, I will describe how supernovae have been observed around the worl
d for nearly 2\,000 years and how they are observed today. I will briefly
describe the physics of these explosions and then showcase some of the man
y roles they play in the Universe. These include creating black holes\, sy
nthesizing and spreading the elements that make up our bodies\, and even s
haping galaxies. Finally\, I will show how astronomers use supernovae as e
xperimental tools to study dark matter and dark energy\, two of the most m
 ysterious phenomena in contemporary physics.
