DESCRIPTION:The majority of children and adolescents worldwide are not phy
sically active enough to maintain good health. Schools have the potential
 to effect large-scale\, inclusive\, and long-term change. Accordingly\, th
ey have been the focus of the majority of government policies and research
-led intervention programmes aiming to increase young people’s physical
activity. The best available evidence suggests that these programmes and p
olicies have largely failed to achieve their desired outcomes and reasons
for this are poorly understood. Mairead Ryan will discuss research from he
r PhD\, which combines insights from multiple fields to determine why such
programmes have failed and how schools can best catalyse change to improv
 e child and adolescent health.
