DESCRIPTION:The talk will trace the history of distributed sensors from in
 ception through to commercialisation and industrial applications.\n\nDistr
 ibuted optical fibre sensors are systems in which an optical fibre senses\
 , along its entire length\, the physical parameter of interest over ranges
  of many km while providing distance-resolved determination of temperature
 \, strain or dynamic strain (vibration). Over the 40 years since the first
  demonstration of this concept\, the technology has spawned applications f
 rom energy cables\, structural monitoring\, perimeter security and hydroca
 rbon production some of which will be illustrated. \n\nThe development of 
 distributed sensors is also one of transitioning technology from universit
 ies into industrial activity\, often into small companies or even start-up
 s and this migration process is another theme of the seminar.\n\nAbout the
  author\n\nArthur Hartog gained a BSc in Electronics at the University of 
 Southampton\, followed by a PhD in the Optical Fibre Research Group.\n\nIn
  1984\, Arthur moved to York Ltd\, a start-up providing instrumentation fo
 r manufacturers of optical fibre preforms\, fibres and cables as well as s
 peciality optical fibres\, which later became part of Schlumberger\, the l
 eading oilfield services company. He left Schlumberger in June 2018 to wor
 k as an independent scientist and engineer. In 2020\, he co-founded Fosina
 \, a French start-up in the field of distributed optical fibre sensors. \n
 \nArthur is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
  Engineers and of the Optical Society of America and a Member of the Europ
