DESCRIPTION:Since their introduction 125 years ago\, p-adic numbers have b
ecome ever-present in number theory. When trying to develop a geometric th
eory analogous to that of complex manifolds in the p-adic setting\, one ru
ns into an immediate problem: the (topological) field of p-adic numbers is
totally disconnected. In this talk I will explain how this can be overcom
e using the theory of adic spaces. I will do so by focusing on some concre
 te examples.
