DESCRIPTION:Architects and Engineers are confronted with the problem of la
yout configuration (i.e space planning\, equipment location and pipe routi
ng). Currently\, designers solve these problems "by hand". In the case of
plant room design\, from a defined schematic solution\, the engineers proc
eed to equipment selection\, then its location\, followed by pipe routing
governed by objective requirements (minimum surface area\, minimum pipe le
ngth\, minimum bend number…). In summary plant room physical design amou
nts to layout configuration followed by pipe routing.\nComputer support fo
r layout configuration has been studied for more than thirty years. In thi
s talk\, Dr Medjdoub will present a constraint programming approach which
importantly avoids the inherent combinatorial complexity for practical lay
out planning problems. Series of research projects led by the speaker and
funded by the EPSRC and the Industry will be presented.\n
