DESCRIPTION:We are developing an automated route-planning method for use b
y our ice-strengthened vessel\, the RRS Sir David Attenborough (SDA)\, whi
ch operates as a supply ship and research vessel in Antarctica. Moving tow
ards low carbon science discovery in the polar regions is a major focus of
attention in polar operations planning. BAS has adopted the very ambitiou
s carbon reduction target of reaching Net Zero by 2040. Achieving this wil
l necessitate both optimising the fuel and carbon efficiency of the routes
travelled by the vessel\, given the hazardous conditions in the Southern
Ocean\, and ensuring that the highest science return possible is achieved
on every day of a science cruise. This talk will present the progress we h
ave made so far on the development of a navigation aid for use by the SDA
Master and navigation officers\, and show how this system will contribute
to the overall carbon reduction strategy for BAS Science operations.
