DESCRIPTION:Professor Detlef Stammer will present a new approach to climat
 e modeling involving coupled data assimilation and Earth System Reanalysis
 . The approach is based on a coupled adjoint model capable of reducing mod
 el biases through parameter optimization and is part of a new research pro
 ject being led by Detlef and his team at Universität Hamburg. Professor S
 tammer is also Chair of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Joint 
 Scientific Committee (JSC)\, and he will use this seminar to provide a bri
 ef overview of some of WCRP’s new climate science initiatives such as th
 e Lighthouse Activities and new Core Projects. It will also promote the up
 coming WCRP Open Science Conference to be held in Kigali (Rwanda) from Oct
 ober 23-27.
