DESCRIPTION:Adjoint models are increasingly used in a range of contexts wi
thin the climate science community\, from creating state estimates to aidi
ng observation system design. But what exactly is an adjoint model\, and w
hat can and can't they tell us? In this seminar I will give a brief overvi
ew of what an adjoint model actually is\, both in theory and practice. I w
ill present the main uses within the climate science community\, namely in
state estimates\, for reconstructions\, for observing system design\, and
for model insight. Finally\, I will provide a look at some of my adjoint
 modelling results and future plans.
