DESCRIPTION:The reuse of structural components in new assemblies is a circ
ular economy strategy whose true potential for global warming mitigation i
s not yet assessed. In this talk\, Prof. Corentin Fivet will present two r
ecent research projects by the Structural Xploration Lab (http://sxl.epfl.
ch) that push the boundaries of structural component reuse. The first one
 – the Geogami pavilion – combines geodesic theory and origami principl
es to build a freeform shell with reclaimed skis. It demonstrates how to o
ptimize new construction methods while accommodating the intrinsic specifi
cities of a reusable stock. The second one – the Re:Crete footbridge –
considers the cutting of obsolete cast-in-place reinforced concrete wall
pieces and their reassembly into a post-tensioned footbridge. It opens up
broad prospects to generalize the component reuse strategy to common concr
ete building structures. Both projects demonstrate the huge environmental
impact savings that are available when reusing waste in new load-bearing a
 pplications.
