DESCRIPTION:Long internal gravity waves in density-stratified oceans have 
 been known to change substantially the ocean surface. Observed surface sig
 natures characterized by increased surface wave steepness are attributed t
 o modulated short surface waves interacting with&nbsp\; slowly-varying sur
 face currents induced by long internal waves. Using asymptotic models for 
 a two-layer system with a free surface\,&nbsp\; near-resonant interactions
  between short surface and long internal waves are studied and the resulti
 ng surface wave modulation is discussed in comparison with observations.
