DESCRIPTION:Ice shelves around the Amundsen Sea have been losing mass rapi
dly in recent years. Ocean warming is an important driver\, as ocean tempe
rature and basal melt show strong decadal variability\, related to changes
in the influx of warm circumpolar deep water on the shelf. \nThe output
of an ensemble of 20 ice-ocean simulations for the period of 1920-2013 is
used to study temporal variability in melt and to delve into the associate
d oceanic dynamics\, wind patterns and tropical variability. This shows a
strong relationship between flow through troughs in the seabed and melt\,
but the relationship with the wind is not as clear as previous studies ind
icated. Special attention is given to the 1940s El Nino event\, which is h
ypothesized to have led to the retreat of ice shelves in the region.
