DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will review what is known about the behaviour o
 f global solar and stellar magnetic fields. I will then discuss methods fr
 om dynamical systems and data-driven fluid dynamics for deriving reduced m
 odels for the generation of this systematic behaviour\, incluiding a discu
 ssion of the recovery of systems of equations from data and prediction of 
 future transitions. I will argue that it is only by understanding the unde
 rlying physical and mathematical nature of the dynamo equations and paying
  careful attention to observational signatures that a full understanding o
 f the interactions will emerge.
