DESCRIPTION:I will show how optimal control of finite-amplitude disturbanc
 es over a freely evolving and possibly turbulent flow\, can systematically
  identify subcritical dynamo solutions without requiring prior knowledge o
 f the magnetic field amplification mechanisms. Following an approach devel
 oped in the context of subcritical transition to turbulence in shear flows
 \, the method identifies both the structure and amplitude of critical pert
 urbations (or "minimal dynamo seeds"). I will discuss some new implication
 s for the modeling of astrophysical dynamos\, in particular Keplerian disc
 s dynamos or the strong branch of the Geodynamo.
