DESCRIPTION:Some models of semantic memory claim that items from living an
d\nnonliving domains have different feature-type profiles. Data from\nfeat
ure generation and perceptual modality rating tasks were compared to\neval
uate this claim. Results from two living (animals and\nfruit/vegetables) a
nd two nonliving (tools and vehicles) categories\nshowed that sensorimotor
ic features were important in object knowledge\nacross both domains. In ad
 dition\, significant cross-domain similarities\nand within domain differen
ces indicated that feature profiles were\nnot determined simply as a funct
ion of the living and nonliving domain\ndistinction. The current data supp
ort a model of semantic memory rooted\nin perceptual and motor processes w
ith reduced salience for the\n"living/nonliving" construct.
