DESCRIPTION:The interest here is in interactions involved in impacts\, ice
formation and melting. There are many such interactions. This mathematica
l-modelling research\, motivated originally by the observed icing of airbo
rne vehicles and the effects of storms\, aims to address the following. Fi
rst is the free motion of ice particles in air and water\, or the distorti
on of water droplets in air flow\, where two-way fluid /body interactions
occur taking account of the small density and viscosity ratios. Second\, i
ce growth soon after a droplet impact onto a fixed solid surface will be d
iscussed\, where the interaction is between the ice shape and the water fl
ow over it. Third\, related problems of melting or freezing of wall-mounte
d ice in local shear flow will be considered\, concerning ice shards\, deb
ris and /or lift-off from a solid surface.
