DESCRIPTION:Many of the requirements for quantum computing have been reali
zed using electron spins confined electrostatically in GaAs quantum dots.
\nThe same experiments have explored the physical effects arising from th
e interactions of single electron spins with the confinement potential\, w
ith lattice nuclei\, and with each other. I will compare two approaches to
quantum computation representing each quantum bit \neither by a single e
lectron spin or by the parity of a spin pair. I will describe in detail ex
periments on electrically driven single-spin resonance\, spin manipulation
using the exchange interaction\, and \nprogress towards two-qubit device
