DESCRIPTION:As the world becomes increasingly hotter and more crowded\, th
e competition for resources and control has accelerated. \n\nThe existenti
al challenges caused by human induced Climate Change and the clash of ideo
logies\, each professing 'superior' values for global society has led to c
ompeting visions for the future. \n\nInterventionist wars and population g
rowth have fuelled increased human movement across the planet at a time wh
en the rich have got richer and the poor have become poorer. \n\nResurgent
xenophobia and protectionism have eroded the recent romance with globalis
ation and have put the UN and the multilateral agencies on the defensive.
\n\nChina's global vision for the 21st Century sees it reaching out with i
ts Belt & Road Initiative (BRI). But is it as inclusive in terms of shared
development and prosperity as China claims?\n\nThe Western Alliance has n
ot put forward a bold global development plan\, arguably leaving the field
to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Its response has been to critici
ze and fear China's initiative and only offer up plans on paper - primaril
y designed to lure countries away from the BRI\, describing it as exploita
tive. \n\nUntil recently the West's response was spearheaded by former Pre
sident Trump's 'America first' centred vision - which includes ending 'end
less wars'. \n\nBut is this approach dissipating as his critics would like
to think? As strategic competition ramps up\, is the answer to global hum
an security more collaboration?\n\nJoin us to hear from Intellectual Forum
Senior Research Associate and former diplomat "Farukh Amil":https://www.j
esus.cam.ac.uk/farukh-amil.\n\nOnline and in-person registration is availa
 ble on our "Eventbrite page":https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bridges-or-wal
