DESCRIPTION:The general problem area addressed in my talk is complicated a
 llomorphy\, with materials drawn mostly from the Northern Wakashan languag
 e Haisla. I will show that classical arguments for abstract analyses are u
 ndercut if we put more of the burden of explanation on history\, and that 
 we arrive at a better set of predictions about languages in this way. A go
 od bit of the talk will consist of an exposition of the phonology and morp
 hology of Haisla.
