DESCRIPTION:To any smooth\, compact curve over a field\, we may associate
its Jacobian. It is a smooth and compact group variety\, which "depends co
ntinuously on the curve"\, and a very important object in AG/number theory
. Limits of smooth curves are not always smooth: they may be nodal\, i.e.
have some points at which they look like two lines intersecting transvers
ally. We will talk about how to get Jacobians for nodal curves which are
"almost as nice" as those of smooth curves.
