DESCRIPTION:The odd cohomology groups H^k\, for k at most 9\, of the modul
 i spaces of stable curves of genus g with n marked points all vanish by wo
 rk of Arbarello--Cornalba (k=1\,3\,5) and Bergström--Faber--Payne (k=7\,9
 ). On the other hand H^11 of the moduli space of stable genus 1 curves wit
 h at least 11 marked points never vanishes because of the existence of the
  discriminant cusp form. I will explain the surprising result that H^11 va
 nishes in all other cases.  This talk is based on joint work with Hannah L
 arson and Sam Payne.
