DESCRIPTION:Friendship is paradigmatically a relationship between equals.
Two people cannot be in an ideal friendship if they do not in some sense h
ave equal authority. But what kind of equality of authority does friendshi
p require\, and why? In this talk I argue that ideal friendship requires e
quality of authority within the roles that structure the friendship. I sug
gest that this is because inequality in regard to such roles prevents the
specific relationship from being fully voluntary.\n\nThis lecture is the t
hird of four this term organised by the new CRASSH Research Network Illumi
 nating Friendship. Open to all.\n\nhttps://www.crassh.cam.ac.uk/research/n
