DESCRIPTION:Cybercrime and cybersecurity have taken centre stage in our li
ves due to technology adoption. Relevant public perceptions can stem from
engrained views on security and crime\, despite sometimes thinking of them
as new. This paper is exploring public perceptions of cybercrime and cybe
rsecurity through the lens of history. It draws parallels between early se
curity (Victorian lockpicking competitions) and cybersecurity\, historical
and contemporary modes of advertising (cyber)security solutions\, and bur
glars and cybercriminals\, to understand modern day attitudes towards cybe
 rsecurity and cybercrime.
