DESCRIPTION:Genome wide association studies have implicated several inflam
mation-related genes as risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease\, particula
rly in relation to innate immunity\, suggesting a component of microglial
activity is likely to be causal in the pathogenic pathway. Therefore\, we
have developed a number of microglial markers to immunophenotype microgli
a in the human brain. I will present our findings on microglial immunophe
notype obtained on human post-mortem cohorts of Alzheimer’s disease and
dementia with Lewy bodies as well as on our unique cohort of brains from A
lzheimer’s patients enrolled in the first clinical trial of Aβ42 immuno
therapy (AN1792\, Elan Pharmaceuticals). These studies highlight the comp
lexity and diversity of microglial responses in dementia and their involve
 ment in therapeutic studies.
