SUMMARY:Microglia and astrocyte involvement in synapse loss in Alzheimer
’s disease - Prof. Tara Spires-Jones. University of Edinburgh\, UK

DESCRIPTION:Synapse loss is the strongest pathological correlate of cognit
ive decline in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and genetic data strongly implic
ate both amyloid beta and changes in microglia in disease pathogenesis. In
this talk\, Prof Spires-Jones will talk about her work showing that (1) A
myloid beta (Ab) accumulates in synapses and contributes to synapse loss\,
  (2) APOE4 and CLU risk genes associated with synapse loss\, (3) Astrocyte
s and microglia ingest synapses in human AD brain\, and (4) Blocking MFGE8
binding integrin receptors reduces human synapse phagocytosis by microgli
 a and astrocytes.\n
