DESCRIPTION:Nonlinear optics and photonics remains an emerging field both
in modeling foundational physical processes and applcations.&nbsp\; At the
heart of advancing new knowledge is the technological ability to manage d
ispersion and diffraction. As it relates to diffraction\, I will discuss a
somewhat novel concept in photonics\, but well known in other fields: Fra
ctional diffraction and the fractional Laplacian. Combined with nonlinear
effects\, the discrete and continuous fractional Nonlinear Schroedinger eq
uation (fNLSE) emerges as a model of interest in optics and photonics. Rec
ent results and theoretical challenges will be presented in this talk.
