DESCRIPTION:Novel exhaust aerosol measurements were made on a modern diese
l engine\noperating on diesel and biodiesel blends with and without aftert
 reatment\ndevices. A two-stage mini-dilution tunnel using ultra-clean dilu
tion air was\nused with a variety of aerosol instruments to determine rela
 tionships\nbetween aerosol size\, number\, surface area\, volume and mass.
These\nmeasurements were made with and without a catalytic stripper to de
termine\nhow instrument response is impacted by the presence of volatile n
ucleation\nmode particles. It was shown that instrument response was impro
ved in some\ncases by removal of volatile nucleation mode particles.\n\nOn
-road diesel aerosol measurements were made using a Mobile Emissions\nLabo
ratory to evaluate the impact of fuel and lubrication oil sulfur content\n
on exhaust aftertreatment performance. Details on how the measurements wer
e\nmade\, instrumentation used\, and a summary of results will be discusse
 d.
