DESCRIPTION:We consider a large data set of rogue waves measured at a site
close to the East Frisian Island Norderney. The data set has been analyze
d using the nonlinear Fourier (or scattering) transform for the Korteweg--
de Vries (KdV) equation with vanishing boundary conditions. The discrete p
art of the nonlinear spectrum corresponds to solitons under ideal propagat
ion w.r.t. to the KdV equation. Its contribution to the rogue waves is inv
estigated. This talk is based on the recent preprint\nTeutsch\, I.\, Br&uu
 ml\;hl\, M.\, Weisse\, R.\, and Wahls\, S.: Contribution of solitons to en
hanced rogue wave occurrence in shallow water: a case study in the souther
