DESCRIPTION:The Cambridge ELLIS Unit Seminar Series holds talks by leading
  researchers in the area of machine learning and AI. Our next speaker will
  be Dr. Maria Perez-Ortiz. Details of her talk can be found below. \n\nTi
 tle: “Towards Planet-centered Artificial Intelligence"\n\nAbstract: Coul
 d technological advances impact our chances of ensuring a sustainable futu
 re? The intersection of technology-sustainability is crucial to understand
 \, specially as disruptive technologies\, such as AI\, accelerate global a
 nd anthropogenic change at an unprecedented pace and without a clear unifi
 ed agenda. In this talk I present planet-centered AI\, which aims to put o
 ur social and environmental ecosystems at the epicentre of development. Th
 is is the core tenet of our new MSc at UCL on AI for Sustainable Developme
 nt\, where we educate engineers on AI\, but at the same time also environm
 ental risks\, social welfare issues\, ethics\, and much more. Planet-cente
 red AI puts the focus on building more responsible AI\, and aligning its d
 evelopment with our most pressing international agendas. Planet-centered m
 eans making AI sustainable\, by enabling it to be more participatory and g
 reen. Along with presenting this ever-evolving framework in the talk\, I w
 ill discuss my research in each of these lines: from building responsible 
 AI\, to deploying AI for sustainability challenges\, to leveraging simulat
 ion intelligence for Earth governance.\n
