DESCRIPTION:What defines a theory of gravity? Diffeomorphism invariance? G
auge symmetries are unphysical so we would like to have another definition
. A massless spin 2 particle? Better. Typically EFTs are defined by their
symmetries and can exhibit different phases. But a UV complete theory of q
uantum gravity is supposed to have no global symmetries. We will approach
this problem from the IR and describe the structure organizing the EFT we
call gravity. We will show how this structure\, through anomalies\, protec
ts the masslessness of the graviton. We will comment on future directions
and how to make contact with the UV perspective.
