DESCRIPTION:This paper will examine the changes that took place metropolit
an Lagos during the Second World War. Although many Nigerians went to figh
t on the South East Asian front in Burma\, there was no direct conflict wi
thin the borders of Nigeria. Nonetheless\, the wartime political economy p
rovoked dramatic social changes in Lagos. The conflict not only gave rise
a more strident form of nationalist politics\, but also led to changes in
kinship structures\, cultural practices and business networks. Discussion
of these changes will be accompanied by a general consideration of the his
toriographical questions that arise in discussing warfare in the context o
 f West Africa.
