DESCRIPTION:I will take the old-fashioned approach and develop a definitio
 n of the\nlocal reciprocity map (for finite abelian extensions of the p-ad
 ics) using\ncentral simple algebras and cyclic algebras. Along the way\, I
  will\nintroduce the Brauer group (which classifies central simple algebra
 s) and\ndefine the Hasse invariant.\n\nI will describe the cases in which 
 an explicit formula has been found for\nthe local reciprocity map and try 
 to explain why this is difficult in\ngeneral for totally ramified extensio
 ns.\n\nThis talk should be accessible to anyone who has encountered extens
 ions of\nlocal fields.\n
