DESCRIPTION:Pierre Bourdieu has said that ‘art is the area par excellenc
e of the denial of the social.’ Through exploring two questions: ‘What
are young artists doing as they seek to start a career?’ and ‘Why Ber
lin?’\, I have found that young artists are acutely aware of the role of
the social. In addition to developing critiques of some existing sociolog
ical accounts of art\, I explore unique characteristics of Berlin as an
‘art capital’ and suggest that attributes of the local art world contr
ibute to young artists’ reflexive encounters with the social.
