DESCRIPTION:I will introduce the classical optimal control problem\, due t
 o Zermelo\, of a\nboat navigating in a wind so as to reach a given point i
 n the minimal time.\nI shall present a solution\, due to Shen\, which maps
  the problem to the study\nof a Finsler geometry related to charged partic
 le motion in a magnetic\nfield. I will then demonstrate how these two rela
 ted problems arise in the\nstudy of null geodesics of stationary spacetime
 s\, and show how the new\nperspectives which arise are of interest both in
  the study of stationary\nspacetimes\, but also in the field of Finsler ge
 ometry.\n
