DESCRIPTION:This talk with Sara Raza will depart from her recent book P
unk Orientalism: The Art of Rebellion stemming from a long term research p
roject on Punk\, Post-Soviet Orientalism and Rebellion in Contemporary Art
.\nFollowing the artists’ lead\, the book Punk Orientalism presents art
and ideas from Sara Raza’s curatorial projects and writing\, and offers
an alternative to the punk movement’s proclamation of “NO FUTURE” be
cause its interests lie in a different kind of future. This thought-provok
ing book presents art and ideas hailing from the former Soviet Union\, foc
using on artists from Central Asia and the Caucasus and reflecting on the
 USSR’s complex relationship with the Arab world\, Afghanistan\, Iran\, a
nd Turkey during and after the Cold War and the collapse of the USSR in 19
 91. The text functions as a form of bricolage\, uniting punk strategies wi
th the critical study of Orientalism and its historical associations with
imperialism. Examining punk methodology as a conduit for revisionist think
ing and rebellion\, appealing to readers interested in revolutionary pract
ices in contemporary art.\nThematically organized Punk Orientalism focusin
g on areas such as geopolitical games\, proxies\, conceptual landscaping a
nd poetic codes as alternative cultural barometers\, alphabet politics (in
cluding the displacement of language and culture)\, whistleblowing\, and t
he ideologies of formal and informal architecture in the making and unmaki
ng of state narratives.\n\nSara Raza is an award-winning curator and write
