DESCRIPTION:As researchers we have a duty to communicate our ide
as. As\ncommunications researchers\, we are privileged to study the tec
hnology\nand phenomena that are so transforming human society. We see
k to\nunderstand and enhance the very tools with which we can convey
our\ncontributions to human knowledge.\nIn Japan there is a mode of presen
 tation called\, Pecha Kucha\, where\nspeakers present 20 images for 20
seconds each\, as a way to convey new\nexperimental thoughts effectively.
I am going to present 12 ideas\,\neach one in that spirit. Rather than
a retrospective of my work\, or a\nvision for a possible future Internet
Architectures\, I want to engage\nin what I do in my daily work graduate
\, thinking of problems that need\nsolving in existing communications syst
ems\, or simply new ways to\nbuild communications systems.\n\n\nI do
not expect more than one or two of these ideas to make it past\nfirst b
ase\, but there is value in learning how to apply one's critical\nfacultie
s even when filtering out bad ideas. Metcalfe's law is that\nthe value
of the network is the square of the number of participants\nsince each
participant contributes new input for all other\nparticipants.
In an Internet of ideas\, then\, this value is only\nachieved if we
contribute our ideas freely.\n\n\nResearchers censor ideas for various re
asons\, including that a new\ncommunications system must have a busine
ss case. The Internet itself\n(the Web\, Facebook and Twitter) was creat
ed without any business case.\nMany startups end up in a business that is
nothing to do with the one-\npager or elevator pitch they presented to the
venture capitalists. We\nhave no business filtering out ideas except if
they are simply bad.\n\n\nSo here are my twelve research elevator pitches.
 \n\nCategories & Subject Descriptors: C.2.1 [Packet-switching
 \nnetworks]\,[Network Communication]\n\nGeneral Terms:. Algorithms\, Perfo
rmance\, Design\n\nBio: Jon Crowcroft is the Marconi Professor of Communic
ations Systems\nin the Computer Laboratory\, of the University of Ca
mbridge since\n2001Prior to that he was Professor of Networked Systems at
University\nCollege London\, where he carried out Internet related resea
rch for 22\nyears in the Computer Science Department on topics rang
ing from\nmulticast to active networks\, and distributed virtual rea
lity to\nspectrum policy. His website is at http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~jac2

 keynote\ncan be found there.\n\n
