DESCRIPTION:The first successful applications of machine intelligence \nwe
re based on expert systems constructed using rules elicited from \nhuman e
xperts. Limitations in the applicability of this approach \nhelped drive t
he second generation of machine intelligence methods\, as \ntypified by ne
ural networks\, which can be characterised as black-box \nstatistical mode
ls fitted to large data sets. In this talk I will \ndescribe a new paradig
m for machine intelligence which has emerged \nover the last five years\,
and which allows strong prior knowledge from \ndomain experts to be combin
ed with machine learning techniques to \nenable a new generation of large-
scale applications. The talk will be \nillustrated with tutorial examples
as well as real-world case studies.\n
