and what can we do about it? - Loïc Lannelongue

DESCRIPTION:The environmental impact of (scientific) computing is a growin
g concern in light of the urgency of the climate crisis\, and there is wid
espread interest in the research community\; so what can we all do about i
t? Tackling this issue and making it easier for scientists to engage with
sustainable computing is what motivated the Green Algorithms project. We w
ill discuss what we learned along the way\, how to estimate the impact of
our work and what levers scientists and institutions have to make their re
search more sustainable. We will also debate the ethical implications of t
hese environmental costs and examine what is still needed moving forward.\
n\nIn the workshop part\, participants will investigate their own projects
to estimate the carbon footprint of their computations and how to reduce
 it.
