DESCRIPTION:Vicky Cowling is a group leader at the Beatson Institute for C
ancer Research in Glasgow. Her research team investigates how modificatio
n of RNA by the addition of methylated cap structures impacts on gene expr
ession. The Cowling lab discovered that formation of the RNA cap is regula
ted by cellular signalling pathways\, resulting in changes in RNA expressi
on\, processing and translation. RNA cap regulation can have potent impact
s on the cell by co-regulating specific families of genes with related fun
ctions\, thereby directing cell function and fate decisions. The current f
ocus of the lab is on understanding how RNA cap formation is regulated dur
ing embryonic stem cell differentiation\, neuron stimulation and T cell ac
tivation. The Cowling lab also works with the Beatson Institute and Dundee
Drug Discovery Unit to develop strategies to interfere with RNA cap forma
tion and function with the aim of suppressing tumour cell growth and immun
e cell function. The lab is predominantly funded by the European Research
Council (ERC)\, Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research UK.\n\nClick here to jo
