DESCRIPTION:Real trees are geodesic spaces in which “triangles are tripo
ds.” These geometric constructions can be used to encode dynamical prope
rties of a surface homeomorphism or a free group automorphism. In this tal
k\, I will define real trees and classify their isometries. Through exampl
es\, I will show you how real trees arise naturally when studying surfaces
and free groups. The talk will end with a brief discussion of real pretre
es\; loosely speaking\, these are “trees without metrics.”
